Alright boys and girls. My name is James, and I have the pleasure of captaining the 1st X Men’s Lacrosse Team this year. No one calls me James. I’d like to say that’s okay with me but I’d be lying. For your information I respond mostly to Jimbo, Bo and Little Bo. Oh and welcome to Warwick Lacrosse, probably the best club in the world.
The Men’s team this year have their work cut out for them: after being pipped to the post by Loughborough in a 12-11 thriller that decided the league title this year we’re back and looking for revenge, and to win the title. Birmingham also unfortunately knocked us out of the Flags Tournament in overtime thriller so all in all; we’ve got some heads to turn and some people to disprove this year.
I for one cannot wait for this season to get underway, with the 2nd Team now fully operational and games coming up for them this term we have a full Lacrosse development system to bring our talent through (Almost all players in the 1st Men’s started with no prior lacrosse experience before University). With Mr. Ben Cuddeford (No one calls him this, he is “Cov Chav”, he is filthy and he has probably stolen every item of clothing you will ever see him in) now captaining the lovely 2nd Team and with a little assistance from 1st Team members in coaching I hope to see a massive bond and ‘brotherhood’ in the 2nds.
We are a massively growing club, starting out the Men’s Team 2 years ago (only a few of us oldies are left: mad props) with only a handful of people who could just about maintain a settle we now have over 35 active Men’s players turning up every week. The dedication from our boys is seen in the fact that we have over 15 people coming up early specifically to take part in pre season training. I would love for us by next year to be having to take trials for the teams, as that would really mark how far we’ve come. On that point I’d like to point out a few special people that have made us what we are, some of whom you’ll know and some of whom you might never meet. They would be our present president Mr Aaron Fox (Dad), our ex-president Ben Morell (Monkey), and ex-captains Duncs Trenholme (Captain Slow) & Neal Roadley (Rudely).
Looking at this year we definitely are in with a chance for the league. Birmingham Bulls are always tough, Nottingham are a bit of an unknown quantity this year after a tough graduating loss of players, Loughborough look good as ever, and are probably going to present us with our biggest challenge of the lot. However, I know that me, and probably the rest of the 1st team, cannot wait to take them on: last year’s game was the closest and also the best game of Lacrosse I have ever played in by a thousand miles. Aberystwyth may present us with more problems than last year with a couple of handy fresher players going there. Keele are always a physical and determined side and the introduction of Staffs will be interesting. The Flags tournament will be awesome now we haven’t drawn the strongest opposition immediately (previous two seasons drew Birmingham first round). Also everyone should put the Bath game in their diary; I really hope we can put up a big fight against a team that just dropped out the southern premiership league, as I think that would prove things to a few people. I cannot bloody wait for this season. It’s going to be massive. I hope the rest of you feel the same.
