Last year the Warwick Women’s Lacrosse team reached the final of the BUSA Trophy where they narrowly lost by only one goal in the last few dramatic seconds, encapsulating a lively and successful season for the squad. As a result of this great accomplishment, my perspective as Warwick Women’s Lacrosse Captain on the up-and-coming year could not be any better!
I am thoroughly excited at the prospect of a great season, one that the team, our new coach Rebecca R-G, and myself all look forward to with enthusiasm and eagerness. After such a fantastic season for Warwick Women’s Lacrosse in ‘06/‘07, which was lead by former captain, Naomi Whittaker, to great success and the aforementioned BUSA Trophy final - - it is evident that I have been left with a strong and flourishing team. All of our previous members are already excited about the new challenges that face us this season and are especially positive about this year’s league line-up.
We look forward to some tough, competitive but excellent lacrosse, with some of our most challenging games being drawn against Loughborough, Oxford and Cambridge. We start the season with a strong team of experienced and skilful players, in both defence and attack and we are also lucky enough this year to benefit from the coaching experience of Rebecca R-G, an England lacrosse player whose training will benefit us all, both as individual players and united on the pitch as a team.
This year we hope to begin the season fresh, fit and ready to compete from the start, helped by the introduction of a new fitness programme and a coach. After some convincing wins in last year’s league against tough competition, I can only hope to see the team move on to even better performances by Christmas with the hope of qualifying for the BUSA Championships in the following term. With the teamwork, cooperation and level of skill that has thrived within the team throughout last season, I am sure I should expect no less.
Another indispensable aspect of the Women’s Lacrosse here at Warwick is the close friendships that have formed within the squad, which is what ultimately defines us as a team when out on the pitch and gives each player the confidence to excel. We also look forward to welcoming new players into the team and I have no doubt that they will immediately become immersed within this game of enthusiasm and passion, which creates amazing athletes as well as friendships and fun.
