WARWICK 2's FACE STIFF COMPETITION AT BIRMINGHAM
27/10/07
Warwick 2nds 2 @ 24 Birmingham
After a defeat at Liverpool the week before, the Warwick 2s headed up to Birmingham last week to play their second match of the season. Learning form their mistakes in their previous match, the team looked to put more structure into their game as they were facing a squad of first team players.
Warwick got of to bad start; they were caught napping and punished by the experience of the Birmingham team, although as the match progressed there was constant improvement by all the Warwick players. Learning from their mistakes, Warwick then defended settles confidently with communication improving as the match went on. Long pole defenders Billy Halani, Shaun Wilson and Quentin Cauldron provided a solid base for the defensive unit. Goal keeper and man-of-the-match Jason Nazareth was on excellent form throughout the match, consistently making high quality saves and ordering the defence around.
In midfield, a lack of confidence on the ball and a few rushed passes meant that most of the play took place in the Warwick half. Face off man Abakar Saidov was winning the ball out of the face, but then the Birmingham players showed real hustle in regaining possession from our middies before the ball could be run into attack
Birmingham also showed their experience on transition and in fast breaks Most of the goals were conceded from the Brum middies moving the ball down before we could set up our defensive settle
When the ball was in attack, Warwick showed they could move the ball at pace and create space. In the third quarter a lightening feed from x was skilfully guided into the goal by fresher Tommaso Tomba, followed later by Simon Robinson pulling the ball out of a scrum of players in front of the crease and sending it into the back of the net.
On the whole, Warwick displayed great potential and played the game with a good attitude right till the end. The Birmingham players were highly complimentary of Warwick performance. Warwick now look forward to using what they’ve learned from this match when the play Nottingham away on Wednesday.
