WARWICK WOMEN TAKE DOWN BROOKES IN SEASON OPENER
17/10/07
Warwick Women 18 @ 4 Oxford Brookes
After narrowly losing out to Oxford Brookes 8-7 in the fixture last season Warwick were gunning for revenge in their season opener against Brookes this year. With a huge fresher intake of talented players confidence was high in the squad, and this was evident in the performance on the day. They are also a much better drilled and organised team this year, due in large part to their new coach Becca Roberts-Gawen, and things will only go from strength to strength as the season continues.
Although the draws were very even, about 50-50 on the day, Warwick's midfield hustle enabled them to turn the ball over and combined with their dominant ground ball play meant they had a sizeable amount of the possession.
When the ball did end up in the Warwick defence the team played well, with good communication and were able to shut the Brookes offence down. Superb in goal was fresher Chloe Bensaid, who is a talented player and a great recruit to the Women's team.
In attack Warwick played very well as a team, remaining comfortable on the ball, even when double teamed, and driving nicely from behind goal to set up many asssited goals. Fresher Alice Williams led the team with a 7 point game (5,2) and returning star Sophie Lovat was the highest scoring existing team member with a 5 point game (4,1).
Warwick face Oxford Women's 2nds next in their Midlands Conference 1A match up.
Season record: (1-0)
