WARWICK 2's RUN NORTHAMPTON CLOSE
17/11/07
Warwick 2's 7 @ 8 Northampton
After losing to Northampton 3 : 2 at Fresherfest, Warwick was looking for revenge when they travelled down to Northampton for a rematch.Unfortunately, all Warwick’s keepers were indisposed; meaning team captain Cov Chav donned the pads for his first time playing between the pipes.
The first quarter set the tone for the rest of the match. Northampton scored first on the inexperienced keeper, but Warwick came back strong with two goals from fresher Kafui Adjogaste (1,0) and Simon Robinson (4,0). The midfield battle was intense with Warwick struggling with the ground balls on the uneven pitch, however with some physical messages being sent out by Matt Fowler (0,1) and Jamie Powel (0,1) Warwick made sure most of the play took place in the Northampton half.
Warwick added to the success of the 1st quarter with Robinson scoring first. Northampton kept up the pressure, but the solid performance of long poles Shaun Wilson, Billy Halini and Quentin Caudron meant Northampton were finding it difficult to get shots off, however before the break they scored twice more leaving the scores level at half time.
The 3rd quarter started with a frantic battle in the midfield, with possession swinging back and forth. D-man Shaun Wilson made some hard hits on their attackers, but Northampton kept the ball moving in their attack and added more 3 to their total. Warwick knew they needed to score to keep them in the game, and this came from Simon Robinson squeezing the ball between the keeper’s head and the top of the goal. A few minutes later Shaun Cregeen (0,0) almost added to the score line, having a goal disallowed for stepping in the crease. A lighting run from midfield saw Matt Fowler setting up Tom Curtis (1,0) leaving Warwick behind at 6 : 5 as the quarter ended.
One goal behind, Warwick went into the 4th quarter determined to win; however within minutes Northampton had scored. Desperate from a goal, Warwick hassled for the ball and didn’t give the Northampton players any space. As time was running out, from nowhere Stewart Hulme (1,0) fired a thunderbolt into the top right corner, but Northampton responded with a goal from a fast break off the face. Still Warwick pressured Northampton and in the dying seconds of the match Robinson managed to pull one back, leaving the final scores Northampton 8, Warwick 7.
