WARWICK LADIES PLAY IN FIRST EVER SECONDS GAME FOR THE CLUB
Warwick Women's 2nd 1 @ 13 Cardiff
Warwick Lacrosse have never been in such a strong position in terms of members and it is due to this that we have been able to set up a Seconds Womens Team for the first time. After a term of hard training, the team which is made up mostly of beginners played their first match against Cardiff Firsts Team on February 2nd. The scoreline was 13-1 but does not reflect the massive effort which was involved, and the improvement of every single player on the pitch.
The first quarter was difficult, as all the players got used to the rules and the pace at which the Cardiff girls were playing. However, by the second quarter everyone was getting the hang of it and there was some extremely good play particularly strong marking from the defence. At half time, we had some encouraging words from our "coach" for the day, Tommy Hamill, and we went into the second half determined to score a goal, which we then did. It was a great settle from the attacking players which enabled this, with a fantastic shot from Laura Bignell, assisted by Antonia Barr. The remainder of the third quarter saw an injury to Roslyn Bennett as a player shot at her from very close range, but the team rallied around and she is now fully recovered. The fourth quarter was extremely well matched, and few would have realised that most of the Warwick team had only picked up a stick a few months ago. A special mention should go to Jane Costello, Steph Allen and Fran Charles for their contribution and great play in the match.
In short, it was a really fun game and we look forward to our match in Sheffield in two weeks time. |
